Five Points From The B2B Loyalty Program Design Checklist
Someone in ops can explain how to earn value in one sentence
If your member's ops team needs a webinar to understand the program, they won't use it. The earn mechanic should fit in a sentence and refer to something the buying unit already does: "Every dollar spent on qualified SKUs earns 1% back in co-op marketing dollars." If yours takes three slides to explain, you've built a compliance document.
The value prop works for the buying unit, not just the champion
Every B2B program has a champion inside the member account, and the trap is designing everything around that one person. Ops will use it, procurement will audit it, and the CFO will ask whether it's worth the paperwork. If the program can only be defended by the person who onboarded, you don't have a program. You have a personal favor.
Your tiers unlock capabilities, not just discounts
Tier discounts are the B2C move that shouldn't survive the translation. Top-tier members shouldn't just get a bigger volume rebate. They should get access to things smaller members can't buy at any price: executive briefings, dedicated technical support, product co-development seats, priority allocation during supply constraints. That's a tier structure worth climbing.
There's a real reason to log in when nothing's on order
A program that only shows up at renewal is a program members forget between renewals. The best programs give members something worth checking on: rebate accrual dashboards, category benchmarking, training progress, priority allocation status, early product access. If the only reason to visit the portal is to redeem points, you've built a coupon dispenser dressed up as a loyalty program.
You measure engagement, not enrollment
Enrollment in B2B is often a rounding error, because members get enrolled at contract signing. The real question is what percentage of enrolled accounts have logged in, redeemed something, or used a program feature in the last 90 days. That's the metric that predicts renewal. If you're reporting membership growth to leadership, you're reporting a number that means nothing.
